   Overview

Saskatchewan's Premier Eco-Adventure Company
CanoeSki Discovery Company is Saskatchewan's premier eco-adventure company specializing in wilderness canoeing and cross-country skiing. Owner and guide Cliff Speer established the company in 1989 after extensive volunteer leadership experience with local canoeing and skiing clubs. Over the intervening years, CanoeSki has gained a reputation for outstanding programs and personal attention to detail. Quality, innovation and a personal touch have become hallmarks of the company and the essence of a superior travel experience for guests.

Saskatoon, Gateway to Paddling Adventures
CanoeSki is based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan's largest city located in the scenic South Saskatchewan River Valley with lush riverbank parks and numerous cultural attractions. Saskatoon has an international airport and its geographic position between northern and southern Saskatchewan, provides a convenient base for guests to explore nearby attractions before or after a CanoeSki wilderness adventure vacation. Saskatoon's ideal location also enables CanoeSki to offer paddling adventures on both southern and northern waterways, each with their own special appeal.

Learning Vacations on Southern & Northern Waterways
The South Saskatchewan, a prairie river flowing through Saskatoon, provides an ideal venue for CanoeSki canoeing lessons and weekend canoe tours. The river's connection to the Great Plains Aboriginal culture and early European exploration and settlement provides rich interpretive themes for CanoeSki tours. On board, local experts in archaeology, history and Aboriginal culture provide guests with a prime learning vacation and a meaningful connection to the land.

North of Saskatoon, scenic provincial and national parks provide another fascinating venue - the boreal forest - for canoeing adventures. Nature, birding and history themes complement CanoeSki canoe trips in Prince Albert National Park, including a visit to Grey Owl's cabin, home of the famous 1930s conservationist. This southern boreal forest National Park is also the stage for CanoeSki's wilderness-oriented family canoeing program.

Moving to Saskatchewan's northern boreal forest, in Lac La Ronge Provincial Park, the fur-trade-famous Churchill River, one of the world's greatest paddling rivers, provides another rich eco-adventure destination in rugged Canadian Shield country. History and archaeology merge along this heritage river where the passage of ancient Aboriginals is marked by vivid rock paintings and the portage trails of centuries-old voyageur fur brigades are virtually unchanged. CanoeSki offers multi-day canoe tours on the Churchill, Paull and Clearwater Rivers developing themes on rock art, voyageur history, geology, ethnobotany and Aboriginal culture.

Women's Canoe Trips
The Churchill River also provides a great venue for a unique women's wilderness canoeing program featuring music and massage. This popular women's only adventure program, provides an intriguing blend of physical challenge, entertainment and relaxation with an on-board musician and a registered massage therapist. Participants are encouraged to leave gender roles behind, develop new skills in wilderness travel and outdoor living, re-connect with nature, and explore new frontiers in personal growth - all in the company of supportive women leaders.

Navigating the Wilderness
Learning to navigate safely is an invaluable wilderness skill. A firm believer in the low tech, reliable, time-tested way of navigating with a map and compass, CanoeSki offers a separate program of orienteering instruction in addition to teaching the basics of map and compass during canoe trips on more complex waterways such as the Churchill River.

Fueling the 21st Century Voyageur
Traveling on wilderness waterways without the assistance of fossil fuels, takes a lot of human energy! A couple of hundred years ago, fur trading voyageurs criss-crossed the Canadian wilderness using high energy food like pemmican. CanoeSki appreciates the spirit of the times, but takes a more pampered approach to fuelling the modern voyageur. Although CanoeSki’s trail food is reputed throughout the paddling territory to be gourmet, they simply call it nutritious, tasty, health conscious and spiked with variety. Local produce and often, organic items are secured from the farmer's market and health food stores to help make up trip menus.

CanoeSki & Skiing
When the snow flies, CanoeSki turns to cross-country skiing lessons and tours to take advantage of the brisk Saskatchewan winters. Telemark courses are also conducted at local ski resorts. At the turning of the millenium, CanoeSki put a new twist on its wilderness ski touring programs combining age-old traditional pursuits with cross-country skiing. Since then, an ecolodge-based program involving draft horses and sled dogs, has offered skiers interesting diversions such as sleigh rides, skijoring, dog sledding, and a horse logging demonstration.
